Constitution

The Institute of Home Safety started in 1976 as the Association of Home Safety Officers. In 1988 at it's AGM the Association agreed to amend the constitution to become an Institute.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the Institute are:

  • to encourage the development of the highest standards of approach to home safety education and training;

  • to promote professional liaison and exchange of knowledge;

  • to co-operate with other bodies

  • to provide a representative body of opinion in home safety matters.

Anyone who has an involvement with home safety will be aware that there are limited opportunities for training. In fact, those entering the field for the first time often find themselves at a loss as to where to start.

However, at the inception of the Institute, a working party was set up to address this serious problem, with the result that a draft discussion document was produced on the preparation, introduction and implementation of a training course in home safety.

Members of the Executive Committee meet regularly with other safety organisations to assist in the formulation of accident prevention modules in recognised training courses. They still strive to keep the subject of home safety firmly on everyone's agenda and campaign to make it a statutory function, similar to that of road safety, and to ensure that there is adequate funding and resources dedicated to it's promotion.

The Institute is also represented on several national committees, including the RoSPA National Home and Leisure Safety Committee, Department of Health Accident Prevention Task Force, Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), and the Parliamentary All-Party Working Group on Home Safety. It is regularly consulted on many issues involving safety equipment and new legislation.

Members come from many and varied backgrounds: Consumer Protection, Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Public Safety, Health Promotion, Public Safety and Health Authorities - the list is seemingly endless. It may, therefore, be useful to supply details of requirements for membership.
